Anna and Dino Get Married in Croatia
Milwaukee has a wonderful Croatian community. In fact, Milwaukee is home to the oldest soccer club in the United States. And guess what…this soccer club just happens to be a Croatian club. So imagine my delight when I was asked to photograph a wedding in Split, Croatia. It is an absolutely breathtaking city. It sits on the western coast looking at the most perfect sunset every single night of the summer.
Fun fact: Last year, I ventured into 23andMe ancestral DNA testing and I learned the Split region is where my ancestors came from. Although my parents were born over there, we couldn’t trace the lineage on my mom’s side further back than 9 generations. To my delight, my favorite town happens to be where my roots grow, so Split is that much more special to me. My peeps are from Split! Anyhow, besides being madly in love with this city, I have to tell you about it’s wedding charm.
When you pair Split with a wedding you’ll be wiping your jaw off the floor. It’s the most perfect backdrop with an ancient Roman palace right in the middle of the city, hunkered down on the shore. Diocletian’s Palace is absolutely a bride’s utopia. So as part of the wedding photography for Ana and Dino, we got out and into those perfect little old nooks of the city and used them as our backdrop. We knew something was missing though, we needed something to bring the life of the region to bring in flavor to our photos. Enter the armed guards (bribed with 20 euros to stand for photos) and the family’s accordion player.
